The Future of Mobile Gaming - Nvidia Tegra K1

The Future of Mobile Gaming
It is bright, but when will it truly be in our hands?

As this year's CES is unfolding Nvidia revealed its new Chip, Tegra K1 192-core Super Chip for mobile devices. Now, how important is this and why should we care? This year mobile gaming is getting more attention and shows a lot of promise when compared to console or computer gaming. Up until now mobile gaming was limited, and still is, graphic wise. This is where Nvidia steps in and promises a whole new level of graphic detail, lighting effects and performance. The question is, will this work?

The Tegra K1 will support all PC gaming technologies, such as DX11, Open GL 4.4 and post processing.

The Tegra K1 will support all PC gaming technologies, such as DX11, Open GL 4.4 and post processing. There will be a 32 bit version of the chip as well as a 64 bit version. The Tegra K1 will come in to different versions the 32-bit 2.3 GHz 4 plus 1 A15 CPU and 64-bit 2.5 GHz Dual Core Denver CPU. This leads to another question, is Nvidia trying to merge its mobile and PC technology? Probably yes, and it is a wise thing to do as mobile technology advances so rapidly that everything we know will change dramatically in 3-5 years.

The main reason users prefer desktops and PC gaming is for their huge amount of power and possibilities. Now don't get me wrong, the Tegra K1 is nowhere near replacing your desktop this year, but it is a step towards the direction of mobile dominance. Chips will continue to get more powerful and not only from the Nvidia side but from competitors as well. Once the competition starts to grow the chips will be getting more powerful faster, eventually matching their PC counterparts.

"impressive demos, full of lag and low frame-rates, but impressive for mobile gaming"

For now though we are presented with the Tegra K1 and its impressive demos, full of lag and low frame-rates, but impressive for mobile gaming. However I am not sure how this will play out in real world situations and how this will perform on your mobile devices. One thing is sure, the future of mobile gaming will be exciting!
