Sony Xperia Z

The dust/waterproof smartphone

What does make a good smartphone? What does it take to say that a smartphone stands out and makes a difference from the competition? Innovation, usability and appeal. Sony pushes all that into the Sony Xperia Z in an attempt to bring the best results into their flagship smartphone. This is the company's premium device as far as the build quality and design go.
By launching Xperia Z before the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, Sony hopes to have a head start in the competition and earn some ground before the competitors get a chance to do so.

"Sony hopes to have a head start"

With brilliant specs and living up to the expectations of today's smartphone and technology standards I think the Sony Xperia Z is off to a good start. It has a Full HD screen, which seems to be the norm this year, that many claim that has not got good viewing angles. In my opinion its strong selling points will be its expandable memory and LTE. It has a 13MP Camera but it might not be as good as its competitors current cameras. As far as its competitors go, most lack expandable memory which can be a deal breaker for some and a plus for the Xperia Z. Another point that Sony hopes to sell is the water/dust proofness of the device, which can appeal to some but not to all, it depends on the use intended for the phone.

Now as far as software goes Xperia Z comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.1 and Sony's slightly changed Cosmic Flow skin, with an update to 4.2 most likely coming soon. If you prefer the pure Android experience you should probably go with the Nexus 4 which takes a strong part in the competition.

The Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z is a great smartphone with an amazing design and an elegant look. It does not come short when it comes to hardware and specs but I would argue that the Sony software like the PlayStation Mobile are under developed and not up to the expectations. The non removable battery may be a deal breaker for some but the expandable memory might make up for it. Is it a good buy? Yes, I would recommend it despite the small flaws it still has a lot to offer and it is a great smartphone.
